Today’s LiDAR solutions are either too expensive or don’t meet the demanding performance requirements for automotive applications, which include long range, wide field of view, high resolution and frame rate at aggressive cost, size, weight and power (C-SWAP) targets -- all while meeting rigorous automotive reliability standards. This talk analyzes the underlying physics governing the behavior of LiDAR systems and derives important insights into the design imperatives required to deliver viable products for the automotive market. We will present these insights and demonstrate how Lumotive can build a high-performance, low-cost LiDAR system based on Liquid Crystal Metasurface technology that utilizes proven silicon manufacturing processes to enable a solid-state, reliable sensor.
Bill Colleran has over 35 years of experience as an engineer, investment banker, technology entrepreneur and business executive. Since 2018, he has been the founding CEO of Lumotive, a leading innovator of solid-state lidar systems. Prior to Lumotive, Bill was the CEO of AnswerDash, a provider of SaaS self-service support solutions which he led from 2015 through 2017. Prior to that, Dr. Colleran served from 2001 through 2014 as the CEO of Impinj (NASDAQ: PI), the world's leading provider of RFID systems. Before joining Impinj, Bill was the CEO of Innovent Systems, developer of the world's first CMOS Bluetooth chip, which he led from inception through the company's sale to Broadcom Corporation in 2000. Prior to Innovent Systems, Dr. Colleran worked for Merrill Lynch’s Technology Investment Banking Group on both financing transactions and acquisitions in the technology sector. He has extensive engineering-design experience, both as a consultant for several Fortune 500 companies and as a Senior Staff Engineer for TRW, Inc. (now part of Northrop Grumman). Dr. Colleran received his Ph.D. from UCLA in 1993, M.S. from USC in 1985, his B.S. from Notre Dame in 1983, all in Electrical Engineering, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1996.
